On May 24, 2017, at 3.30 pm, the Chamber of Deputies of the Italian Parliament will be hosting Professor Giovanni Dosi, Director of the Institute of Economics – Sant’Anna School and Professor Mariana Mazzucato,  Director of the Institute for Innovation & Public Purpose - UCL (University College London) and the author of The Entrepreneurial State: Debunking Private vs. Public Sector Myths, to deliver a lecture on the role of the Entrepreneurial State - “Lo Stato innovatore”.

The conference in Rome provides a forum for the presentation of the results of the ISIGrowth project, a 3-year EC Horizon 2020 funded project, coordinated by Professor Giovanni Dosi, to provide a coherent policy toolkit to achieve the Europe 2020 objectives of smart, sustainable and inclusive growth.

Seventy-one years after his death, Keynes' theories are still prominent, his quote “The important thing for Government is not to do things which individuals are doing already, and to do them a little better or a little worse; but to do those things which at present are not done at all” will open the conference. The conference keynote speaker is Professor Andrea Roventini of Sant’Anna School - Institute of Economics. Luigi di Maio, Deputy President of the Chamber of Deputies and Laura Castelli, Budget Committee of the Chamber of Deputies, will give the welcome speech. Professor Giovanni Dosi will give his talk “Oltre l’austerità e la flessibilità del lavoro: le politiche di rilancio macroeconomico”, Professor Mariana Mazzuccato addresses the topic “Lo Stato innovatore e le politiche industriali ‘mission oriented’ ”.

Austerity has affected the EU, and politicians have failed to provide a vision for future growth and prosperity. Economic policy in Italy has failed to provide technological innovation and new initiatives for a 'mission oriented' approach to investments. By limiting the role of the public sector to one that ‘administers’, ‘fixes’, ‘de-risks’, and ‘regulates’, we are unable to risk-taking and lead to transformational economic change.

Marianna Mazzucato highlighted in her essay that government should not just ‘level the playing field’. She suggested that a new framework should recognize Government’s role in creating and shaping new markets with the potential to transform economic growth, making it more innovation-led, as well as more inclusive and sustainable.
