CoMoS Climate Change meeting in January

CoMoS, the Complexity Modellers' Society, will hold another meeting focused on climate change research on January 26, 2021. The meeting will take place from 3pm to 5pm in virtual mode. This time, the spotlight will be on our collaborators and colleagues from U.S. Universities, who will present their ongoing work. The program includes four talks and two Q&A sessions:

  • Klaus Keller (Department of Geosciences, Penn State University): Improving flood hazard characterization and flood-risk management. 15:00 - 15:15

  • Marco Tedesco (Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory, Columbia University): Circumstantial evidence of climate gentrification in Florida associated with floods.  15:15-15:30

  • Q&A Session 15:30:16:00

  • Guido Cervone (Department of Geography,  Penn State University): Looking at the atmosphere or through it: atmospheric characterization in remote sensing via machine learning. 16:00-16:15

  • Carolynne Hultquist (Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory, Columbia University): Seeing with new eyes: comparative geospatial analysis of citizen-contributed and government data during environmental hazards. 16:15-16:30

  • Q&A Session 16:30-17:00

The meeting is part of the initiatives of CoMoS Climate Change (CCC), a newly born community within the Sant’Anna School of Advanced Studies which follows in the footsteps of the CoMoS experience. CCC connects researchers from different disciplines working on subjects related to climate change from various perspectives, including political economy, data science, economics of complexity, statistics, climatology and genomics. The activities of the CCC are coordinated through EMdeDS, and involve scholars from several Institutes of the School (Economics and Life Sciences), the 3CSA Center, as well as Universities abroad (e.g., Penn State University and Columbia University). 

CCC organizes regular meetings open to external visitors, and aims to promote a data-driven, multidisciplinary approach to a complex topic such as climate change, its consequences on our society and our planet, and the policy tools we can adopt to face it. CCC also organizes technical workshops to disseminate best practices and procedures, including software usage, data visualization and statistical tools. Its members actively contribute to the GitHub repositories of the CoMoS and EMbeDS communities.
