Klaus Keller, from Penn State University, presents "Climate Risk Management: From Decision-Making to Basic Research and Back"

As part of the Seminar Series of the Institute of Economics, Klaus Keller will hold a webinar titled "Climate Risk Management: From Decision-Making to Basic Research and Back" on Tuesday, May 18, 2021 at 14 p.m.

Klaus is a Professor of Geosciences and the founding director of the Center for Climate Risk Management at  Penn State University. He has ongoing collaborations with several members of the EMbeDS community -- including Francesca Chiaromonte, Andrea Roventini, Francesco Lamperti and Matteo Coronese, with whom he has published a study on the economic impacts of climate-change related natural disasters. He is also a regular participant in the initiatives of our young researchers in CoMoS Climate Change, including a meeting held in January 2021.

Here is the abstract of Klaus' presentation: Climate change drives considerable risks. Designing strategies to manage these risks poses wicked problems that require mission-oriented basic research. One key challenge is that projections about the coupled natural-human systems are subject to deep and dynamic uncertainties. In addition, stakeholders and decision-makers often have conflicting objectives. This presentation discusses approaches to improve the design of risk management strategies using the example of flood-risk management. The presentation reviews approaches to (i) improve our quantitative understanding of the coupled natural-human systems dynamics, (ii) use this information to improve the design of risk management strategies, and (iii) use the insights from the decision-analyses to inform the design of mission-oriented basic research.
