Luigi (Gigi) Orsenigo, RM Phillips Professor of Economics of Innovation at SPRU - Science Policy Research Unit at the University of Sussex - and fellow of the Institute of Economics, passed away on April 30, 2018.

Gigi was one of the leading scholars in the field of economics of innovation, his research agenda was consistently insightful and creative, always driven by fundamental policy concerns.

Before his appointment at SPRU, Gigi was professor of applied economics at IUSS.  In that role, he made a major contribution to the emergence and consolidation of the cooperation between Sant'Anna and IUSS.  This work resulted in the creation of the joint PhD programme in Economics Sant'Anna-IUSS, and eventually in the federation between Sant'Anna, IUSS, and Scuola Normale.

Gigi was an enthusiastic scholar, a gentle and kind man, always generous of his time and affection with friends, colleagues and students.  He will be sorrowfully missed by everybody here at Sant'Anna.
